A woman was shot and killed Thursday morning at a home northeast of Sparta, and her adult son was taken into custody a short time later, according to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded shortly after 9 a.m. to a home near Indian Lakes Road and Pine Island Drive, between Sparta and Cedar Springs. Other people inside the home called 911, Sheriff Bryan Muir said.

Authorities described the shooting as a domestic incident involving a mother and son. Neither person’s name was immediately released.

“It’s a mother-son relationship,” Muir said. “An adult mother is trying to take care of her adult son, doing the best they can.”

Investigators tracked a cellphone to help locate the son while deputies and officers searched the surrounding area. Rockford police, Michigan State Police and plainclothes detectives assisted in the search.

The son was found near Ritchie Avenue and 14 Mile Road in Courtland Township, roughly 5.5 miles from the home. Muir said he was taken into custody peacefully, without the use of force.

The response and search unfolded within about half an hour, according to the sheriff.

“The community is safe right now,” Muir said. “The only person we believe that acted is in custody with the sheriff’s office.”

Authorities had not determined a motive, and the investigation remained ongoing.
