CEDAR SPRINGS - If you walk into the vision center inside the 17 Mile Road Meijer in Cedar Springs, you may notice a sign stating they are closed.

All Meijer locations have permanently closed their vision centers after U.S. Vision, the company that operated the optical departments inside Meijer stores, shut down all of its locations nationwide on May 23.

The closure was abrupt and affected all Meijer Optical sites operated by U.S. Vision, including the stores in Cedar Springs and Greenville. U.S. Vision managed the optical departments as a third party, meaning Meijer did not directly operate those locations.

Customers with pending eyeglasses or contact lens orders do not need to return to the store. According to information provided to customers, all orders that were pending at the time of the closure were processed and will be shipped directly to customers' homes within three weeks of May 23.

U.S. Vision said customers with questions about orders, home delivery, prescriptions or records can call its customer service line at 1-866-435-7111.

The Bugle was unable to obtain a statement from U.S. Vision leadership at the time of publication, but the shutdown appears to be tied to a broader corporate decision to exit its retail lease agreements and wind down its operations. The company had operated optical departments inside major retailers, including Meijer, JCPenney and military exchanges.

Because the optical centers were operated by U.S. Vision and not the host retailers, the closures took effect when the company ended those agreements. That left local stores closing with little notice.

For Cedar Springs area residents, the closure means customers who need future eye care services, prescription transfers, glasses or contact lenses will need to seek other providers in the area.

One such provider, located at 88 N. Main Street in downtown Cedar Springs says he's ready to help.

"We understand that the recent closure of Meijer Optical in Cedar Springs may be unexpected and inconvenient for many patients who rely on regular eye care services," said Dr. Matt Black, owner of White Pine Eyecare. "Changes like this can make it difficult to know where to turn for eye exams, contact lens care, and ongoing vision health needs."

Dr. Black says he wants the community to know that he is actively welcoming new patients and is committed to making the transition as smooth as possible.

"If you have been affected by the Meijer Optical closure, we encourage you to contact White Pine Eyecare to schedule an appointment. We are ready to help you continue receiving the care you need, when you need it.

Customers who need copies of prescriptions or optical records are encouraged to contact U.S. Vision directly.
