NELSON TOWNSHIP — A 28-year-old woman was pronounced dead and a seriously injured 44-year-old man was flown to a hospital after Kent County sheriff’s deputies stopped a pickup truck during a suspicious-person investigation.

The Kent County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the woman’s death as suspicious. Investigators do not believe there are any outstanding suspects or an ongoing threat to the community.

Deputies were dispatched at approximately 10:52 a.m. to a residence near Lincoln Lake Avenue and 19 Mile Road after a caller reported that a man covered in blood and in distress had arrived at their home.

The man left in a pickup truck before deputies arrived. The caller provided a vehicle description and its direction of travel.

A short time later, deputies located and stopped the truck on 18 Mile Road near Pine Lake Avenue. The driver was suffering from serious injuries and blood loss. Deputies provided immediate medical assistance, including applying a tourniquet.

AeroMed transported the man to a local hospital for treatment. He was reported to be in stable condition.

Deputies also found an unresponsive woman in the passenger seat with wounds consistent with an injury from a bladed weapon. Deputies and medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators confirmed the man and woman knew each other. They are working to determine what happened and where the injuries occurred.

The investigation remains active, and the Sheriff’s Office said additional information will be released as it progresses.

Anyone with information that could assist investigators is asked to call the Kent County Sheriff’s Office at 616-632-6125 or submit a tip to Silent Observer online or by calling 616-774-2345.
