A 44-year-old Sand Lake man accused of killing a Greenville woman was denied bond Thursday during his arraignment in Montcalm County’s 64B District Court.

Matthew Duane Jackson faces charges of open murder and carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent in connection with the death of Holly Kay Luna, 28. The charges carry maximum penalties of life imprisonment and five years in prison, respectively.

Jackson appeared remotely from the Kent County Jail before Montcalm County's 64B District Court Judge Adam Eggleston, who denied bond, citing community safety, the seriousness of the charges and flight-risk concerns.

Luna was found critically injured Monday morning in the passenger seat of a pickup truck stopped by Kent County sheriff’s deputies on 18 Mile Road near Pine Lake Avenue in Nelson Township. She was pronounced dead at the scene despite lifesaving efforts.

Jackson, who was driving the truck, was treated for serious injuries and flown to a hospital.

Following a joint investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and Greenville Department of Public Safety, authorities determined the alleged attack likely occurred inside the truck while it was traveling through downtown Greenville.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for Nov. 18 at 10 a.m. A preliminary examination is tentatively set for Nov. 24 at 9 a.m., subject to scheduling changes.
